Does composite decking discolour? Find out what you need to know.
Wondering whether composite decking discolours? Find out what causes it and how to prevent it and care for your composite decking boards, so your terrace looks great for years to come.

Composite decking boards, also known as WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) boards, are an increasingly popular choice for building patios, balconies and garden paths. They are durable and weather-resistant and, importantly, do not require painting or oiling like wood. But many people ask one key question: does composite decking discolour?
The short answer? Yes – but not always and not straight away. The longer answer? That’s exactly what this blog is for! 😊
What are composite decking boards?
Let’s start with the basics. Composite decking boards are a material combining wood (e.g. wood flour) with plastic (usually polyethylene or PVC). This makes them:
-
resistant to moisture,
-
resistant to mould,
-
do not require treatment,
-
have a uniform colour and texture,
-
are available in various finishes and shades.
In short: they’re meant to look like wood but perform like plastic. Ideal, right?
But, like any material, they have their limitations. Discolouration is one of them.
Does composite decking discolour? The answer is: it depends!
Yes, composite decking can fade...
Over time, almost any material exposed to UV rays, wind, rain and frost starts to lose some of its colour intensity. Composite decking is no exception. Most often:
-
after a few months, the surface becomes slightly dull,
-
the colour may become less saturated,
-
more noticeable shade differences may appear in heavily used areas.
But don’t worry – this is a natural and predictable phenomenon.

...but only to a limited extent
Most modern composite decking boards have a special UV-protective layer (particularly co-extrusion models, i.e. composite decking boards with a protective covering). This means:
-
discolouration is minimal and virtually unnoticeable,
-
the colour stabilises after approx. 3–6 months of use,
-
the patio looks good for many years – without painting.
What causes composite decking boards to discolour?
1. UV radiation.
The sun is the main “culprit” behind fading. Although composite decking is more resistant than wood, it reacts to UV radiation. During the first few months of use, there may be a slight change in shade – this is known as natural colour stabilisation.
2. Organic contaminants.
Leaves, moss, barbecue grease, wine, coffee, juice... In everyday use, anything can end up on the patio. If stains are not removed regularly, they can cause discolouration or permanent changes in colour.
3. Hard water and limescale.
Water with a high mineral content can leave white residue, which will dull the surface over time and affect its appearance.
4. Incorrect installation or improper care.
Boards installed without gaps, too close to the ground or without ventilation – all of this contributes to a build-up of moisture and dirt, leading to uneven discolouration.
How can you prevent composite decking from discolouring?
1. Choose boards with a protective layer.
Boards made using co-extrusion have an outer protective coating that resists UV, dirt and abrasion. These models are more resistant to discolouration and retain their colour even after many seasons.
2. Clean the surface regularly.
-
At least 2 times a year (spring and autumn) – clean with soapy water.
-
Avoid greasy stains and do not leave leaves on the surface for long.
-
Use specialist composite cleaning products – e.g. HG, Osmo.
3. Avoid scrubbing with sharp tools.
A stiff brush or scrubbing with a metal wire scourer can damage the surface structure, making it more susceptible to dirt and discolouration.
4. Use protective mats under the barbecue or furniture.
This simple solution protects against grease, spills and scratches.
Can discoloured composite decking be “repaired”?
Some types of boards (especially those without a protective coating) can be gently refreshed:
1. Gentle sanding.
For uncoated WPC boards, lightly sanding the surface may reveal a deeper layer of material in its original colour. Please note – this applies only to some models!
2. Specialist care products.
Some companies offer products that “refresh” the colour. They work like a conditioner – improving the appearance, but they will not restore the colour completely.
3. Replacing individual boards.
In extreme cases (e.g. stains caused by chemicals, fire or wine), it is worth replacing individual elements – this is easier than with traditional materials.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions
Do composite decking boards change colour after installation?
Yes, slight dulling may occur in the first few months – this is a normal reaction of the material to UV and weather conditions.
Can composite decking be painted if it discolours?
Painting composite decking is not recommended – paint does not adhere well to this surface. It is better to clean the board or, if appropriate, gently sand it (if the manufacturer permits this).
Does all composite decking fade in the same way?
No – boards with a protective coating (co-extrusion) are much more resistant to discolouration than standard WPC boards.
How long does composite decking retain its colour?
With proper care and a good-quality product – even a dozen or so years. The colour stabilises after the first 3–6 months.
In conclusion: Is composite decking worth investing in?
Absolutely! Although composite decking may change shade slightly over time, it:
-
does not need painting,
-
is easy to care for,
-
is resistant to weather conditions,
-
retains its good looks for years.
If you want a durable, low-maintenance terrace and are concerned about discolouration, choose boards with a protective coating and clean them regularly. It really is a small effort for a beautiful result.
