Summer deck maintenance – what to do during the season so you won’t regret it in autumn.
Look after your decking this summer! Find out how to maintain timber and composite decking properly during the summer to avoid costly repairs in autumn.

Summer – a time for barbecues, get-togethers with friends and morning coffee outdoors. The terrace becomes the heart of the garden, the centre of outdoor life at home. But... summer is also when we use our terrace most intensively. That’s why it’s worth thinking about more than just decorations and furniture. Summer terrace maintenance is something we often overlook – after all, “it’s warm, nothing’s happening”. Yet summer is the easiest time to look after the surface, structure and details that might otherwise need serious (and costly) repairs by autumn. In this article, I’ll suggest what’s worth doing in summer to keep your terrace in excellent condition and prepare it for autumn rain, damp and falling leaves. Ready? Let’s get started!
Why is summer terrace maintenance so important?
When the sun is shining, everything looks fine – but this is precisely when the terrace is most exposed to wear and tear. High temperatures, UV radiation, intensive use, moisture from watering plants, barbecue marks… all of these can affect the condition of the material.
What can happen if you neglect maintenance?
-
wood cracking and warping,
-
fading colours,
-
mould and algae growth,
-
loose structural components,
-
permanent dirt and greasy stains.
Remember: prevention costs far less than repairs!
Which terraces need maintenance?
In short – all of them, but to varying degrees. Let’s take a look:
| Type of terrace | Does it need maintenance? | What to do in summer? |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden | ✅ Yes | Oiling, cleaning, checking for moisture |
| WPC composite | ✅ Yes | Washing, checking joints, protective treatment |
| Ceramic tiled | ✅ Yes | Cleaning grout, sealing |
| Concrete | ✅ Yes | Impregnation, cleaning |

Summer cleaning – where to start?
Start with a thorough inspection and clean-up. This is the basis for any further maintenance.
Step by step:
-
Remove all furniture and plant pots – give yourself full access to the surface.
-
Sweep – get rid of sand, leaves, needles and debris.
-
Wash the terrace – use water with a mild detergent and a brush.
-
Inspect the surface – look for cracks, discolouration and loose decking boards or tiles.
-
Wipe down the balustrades and handrails – don’t forget the details!
Wooden terrace maintenance – don’t wait until autumn!
Wooden terraces (larch, pine and exotic species) need special care because they are exposed to:
-
drying out,
-
greying,
-
cracking,
-
fungi and mould.
What to do in summer?
-
Oiling the wood – the best time is on a dry, warm day. Use decking oil with UV filters.
-
Removing stains – especially grease from the barbecue! Do it straight away, before it soaks in.
-
Sanding damaged areas – lightly sand with sandpaper before oiling.
-
Checking the structure – check, whether the screws and battens are secure.
Composite decking – easier to maintain, but still needs attention.
Composite decking board (WPC) terraces require less maintenance, but that doesn't mean they're maintenance-free.
What should you do in summer?
-
Washing the boards – with plain water and a mild detergent and brush. Avoid pressure washers!
-
Removing algae and mould – especially in shaded areas.
-
Checking joints and gaps – check for any looseness or damaged fixing clips.
-
Sealing the joints (if applicable) – to prevent algae and dirt from building up there.
Watch out for the most common summer hazards!
1. Barbecuing without a protective mat
Grease and high temperatures can permanently damage the surface.
2. Sprinklers and watering
Watering plants too heavily can lead to standing water and algae growth.
3. Sun and UV
Sunlight causes colour fading – especially on timber and composite decking.

Don't forget the accessories!
Summer terrace maintenance isn't just about the floor. Also take care of:
-
garden furniture – check whether it needs treating or cleaning,
-
cushions and textiles – store them in a dry place to prevent mould,
-
plant pots and stands – check that they aren't leaking or damaging the surface,
-
lighting – clean the solar lights, check the batteries and adjust the direction of the light.
Plan for autumn… while it's still summer
If you notice any minor faults, there's still time to fix them in summer. The weather in autumn may make it impossible to carry out the work.
Make a checklist:
-
Is the surface clean and protected?
-
Is the terrace structure stable?
-
Are the railings secure?
-
Are the accessories and furniture in good condition?
-
Are you planning to treat the terrace before winter?
Instead of a conclusion… A terrace ready for anything!
Summer is the perfect time to give your terrace some attention. Regular care during the season means autumn and winter won't bring any unpleasant surprises. Small, consistent efforts will help you avoid costly renovations and... keep your outdoor relaxation space looking its best.
Don't think of maintenance as a chore – see it as an investment in comfort and peace of mind. There's nothing better than stepping onto your terrace in autumn and saying to yourself: “I'm glad I did that in summer!”.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Does composite decking need treating in summer?
No, but it's worth washing it and checking for algae and mould growth.
When is the best time to oil a timber terrace?
On a warm, dry day – preferably in early summer or late spring. Remember, the timber must be dry!
Can I use a pressure washer to clean my terrace?
Use it sparingly. For timber and composite decking, use low pressure and keep the nozzle at a safe distance.
Which cleaning products are best?
Natural products (e.g. vinegar and water) or cleaners designed for terraces. Avoid harsh chemicals.
