Composite finishing trims - characteristics

Composite components have many features that encourage owners of decking and other structures to use them in their own gardens. The same applies to composite finishing trims, which are suitable for finishing the edges of decking boards and façades. The trims conceal areas that should not be visible at first glance, ensuring an attractive appearance for the entire deck.

What are composite finishing trims?

Composite finishing trims are finishing components that combine the characteristic features of wooden and plastic trims. In practice, this means they offer the strength and resistance to weathering and rot typical of plastics, while retaining the natural appearance of wood. Composite finishing trims conceal unsightly decking board edges and the points where building façades meet the ground.

Advantages of composite finishing trims

This type of trim has several distinctive features, including:

  • resistance to moisture and mould: composite trims do not absorb water, helping to protect board ends from moisture and mould growth;
  • durability and strength: composite finishing trims are highly durable and resistant to mechanical damage. They do not crack and resist the adverse effects of weather conditions such as temperature changes, rain or snow and UV radiation;
  • attractive appearance: finishing trims are available in various colours. GARDEN POLSKA offers trims in shades of light brown, dark brown, graphite and light brown.
  • ease of installation: composite trims are lightweight and easy to install. Simply bond them to the façade, front of the deck or board edge using a specialist adhesive;
  • versatile applications: Depending on their type, composite finishing trims can be used on decking board edges, deck fronts, building façades and fences.

Composite finishing trims – the GARDEN POLSKA range

The gardpol.pl range includes composite fascia trims and angle trims in four versatile colour options – light brown, dark brown, graphite and light grey. The range includes the following composite finishing trims:

  • DUO composite fascia trim: used with DUO composite decking board systems, which feature a 3D texture imitating the appearance of natural wooden boards;
  • SELECT composite fascia trim: for SELECT composite decking board systems, which feature distinctive grooves reminiscent of wooden boards, making them ideal for decks, balconies and loggias;
  • DUO composite angle trim: as with the DUO composite fascia trim;
  • GARDIN composite angle trim: for GARDIN composite decking board systems that imitate grooved wooden boards;
  • GARDPOL composite angle trim: a product from our own brand. The trims have a uniform shade and do not lose their colour over the years;
  • PREMIUM composite angle trim: used with PREMIUM composite decking board systems, which have a wood texture on both sides and may differ in colour from one side to the other;
  • SELECT composite angle trim: as with the SELECT composite fascia trim.

Installing composite finishing trims

Depending on the requirements of the project and the user's individual preferences, composite finishing trims are installed using A2 stainless steel screws or a specialist construction adhesive. Installation is very easy, regardless of the method, and takes little time, leaving more time for structures that require greater attention. When installing composite trims, make sure they are fixed so that they cover the entire surface of the board edge.

Which works better: angle trim or fascia trim?

Angle trim works particularly well on deck corners and edges. It protects them from mechanical damage and provides an attractive finish. Fascia trim, on the other hand, is used along walls, on the sides of a deck or wherever the structure underneath needs to be concealed. On decks, angle trims are most commonly used on edges, with fascia trims along walls and sides.

How do you install finishing trims?

Finishing trims can be installed using elastomeric adhesive or self-drilling screws, depending on the installation location and your preferences. Adhesive works well on smooth surfaces and provides a neat, concealed fixing, while screws provide a secure hold.

Are finishing trims suitable for steps?

Yes, finishing trims can also be used on steps. They help give step edges a neat finish and protect them from damage.

Are finishing trims necessary when installing a deck?

They are not technically necessary – a deck can function without them. However, they give the deck a tidy appearance by concealing the structure beneath the boards and protecting the edges from dirt.

Does finishing trim trap water on the deck?

No, provided it is installed correctly: with a small gap between the trim and the boards to allow water to drain away. In this case, it does not obstruct drainage.

How do you attach fascia trim to a building wall?

The best way to attach fascia trim to a building wall is with adhesive, particularly if drilling or using wall plugs in the façade is undesirable. Adhesive provides a strong, durable bond while maintaining the appearance of the façade and avoiding damage.

How do finishing trims affect ventilation beneath the deck?

Correctly installed finishing trims do not block ventilation. They leave small gaps that allow air to circulate and moisture to escape from beneath the deck, protecting the structure from water build-up and mould.

Can you cut finishing trims to size yourself?

Yes, you can cut finishing trims to size yourself using a wood saw or circular saw. It is important to make precise cuts that leave smooth edges so that the trims fit neatly against the deck or wall.

Can finishing trims be removed and reinstalled?

Yes, in most systems, trims can be removed and reinstalled, especially if screws were used. With elastomeric adhesive, reuse may require gentle cleaning of the surface and a fresh application of adhesive.

Do finishing trims suit all decking boards?

No, finishing trims do not suit all decking boards. Choose an appropriate colour for the particular type and colour of board. This will ensure the trim blends in with the deck rather than looking out of place.
