The role of paving slab pedestals
Paving slab pedestals level the terrace and enable quick, simple and inexpensive installation of the supporting structure. They also allow the terrace height to be adjusted using the screws and nuts incorporated into their design. Properly positioned and installed paving slab pedestals create an effective system for distributing the weight of the entire structure.
Functions of paving slab pedestals
- Stability and strength: pedestals must be designed to effectively transfer loads from the paving slabs to the substrate. Properly designed pedestals ensure even load distribution, minimising the risk of slabs deforming or cracking.
- Height adjustment and levelling: some pedestals offer precise height adjustment, making it possible to adjust the level of the paving slabs to compensate for an uneven substrate. This is particularly important when installing on uneven surfaces.
- Installation and removal: pedestals should be easy to install and allow quick removal when access to the space beneath the terrace is required. This allows maintenance and any repairs to be carried out efficiently and without major difficulties.
The construction of paving slab pedestals
The paving slab pedestals in our range are designed to enable effective self-levelling of the structure they support. Each pedestal consists of a head, which is fitted directly to the paving slabs; a screw responsible for automatic levelling of the head and height adjustment; a low-profile nut that acts as a lock to prevent the pedestal from unscrewing; a high-profile nut that also contributes to height adjustment; and a ribbed base that increases the pedestal's load-bearing capacity. These components work together to create an effective system for levelling the terrace structure.
Planning the layout and installing paving slab pedestals
When designing a terrace, it is important to consider the appropriate number of pedestals and their positioning to ensure even loading across the entire structure. Pedestals should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, using the appropriate spacing and installation techniques. The wide pedestal bases prevent excessive point loads by effectively distributing the weight. One of the main advantages of using paving slab pedestals is that they make installation significantly easier and faster.
Expansion gaps with paving slab pedestals
The paving slab pedestal models we offer allow you to set an expansion gap, which lets construction materials expand, contract and move freely. The integrated spacer tabs on the pedestals allow the gap between slabs to be set precisely at 3 mm. This feature is available on all terrace pedestals in the ALU series, which offers high fire resistance and meets stringent technical requirements.
