Decking screws are fixings used to secure decking boards to decking joists. Different types of screws are used depending on the material the deck is made from. The main features to consider when choosing them are length, diameter, head type and the presence of special protective coatings.
Characteristics of decking screws
Decking screws hold the deck structure together by joining individual components such as decking boards, joists, railings, etc. For this reason, they should offer corrosion resistance, as corrosion could destroy the connections between the deck's structural components and pose a danger to everyone using it.
The durability and strength of decking screws are also important for safety. When building a deck, use screws that will not break easily and will provide secure connections between its individual structural components.
Changes in temperature and humidity can also affect the service life of decking screws, as they can cause materials (primarily wood) to expand and contract. Decking screws should keep the structure secure despite the damaging effects of these weather conditions.
Corrosion resistance means that decking screws retain their attractive appearance for a long time because they do not rust.
The role of decking screws
Decking screws are extremely important when building a deck because they perform several key functions:
- Structural stability: they provide strong connections between decking boards and the supporting base, which is essential for the safety of those using the deck.
- Durability: made from stainless steel or special weather-resistant alloys, they protect the deck against corrosion and ensure the structure's longevity.
- Appearance: Well-chosen decking screws can contribute to the deck's appearance through both their head type (recessed or raised) and their colour (if the screws have special protective coatings).
Types of decking screws
There are several types of decking screws, which can differ in head type and material. The GARDEN POLSKA range includes the following types of A2 screws:
- stainless steel façade screw: effectively reduces splitting in wood, while its special thread draws the connections between decking boards and joists tight, reducing the risk of the structure creaking;
- countersunk self-drilling screw for aluminium: the screw head is designed to allow the screw to be driven in without pre-drilling holes. The spiral geometry of the drill point prevents the screw from slipping across the surface being drilled;
- countersunk decking screw for wood: provides a secure structural connection between wooden decking boards and wooden joists;
- stainless steel decking screw: penetrates wood easily thanks to its small cylindrical head and reduces splitting in the wood as it is driven in. Available in two colours – silver and antique gold.
How to choose decking screws for boards?
Many people think that choosing screws is not particularly important when building a deck, because the material of the joists and decking boards has a greater influence on structural stability. Nothing could be further from the truth. If these components are not securely joined together, the quality of the material they are made from will not matter much, as the deck will still wobble and creak. The most important consideration when choosing decking screws is their length. A screw should be at least twice the thickness of the board, and it can be even longer. Naturally, it should be driven in at a right angle. The quality of the decking screws is also extremely important: they should not break or bend. If you notice this happening during installation, use a different type of screw.
